Ditta G. Poggi
Via Del Gesù, Roma
Tel: 06 679 3674

For the best art supplies in Rome (but also the most expensive). Located very close to the Pantheon, Poggi stock a middle to high quality range of products including raw pigments and specialized goods for art restoration. If you have ever had the pleasure of visiting Zecchi in Florence, well this is a poor man’s version! They have the only decent brushes in Rome (“Raphael” brand) but they are rarely in stock. If you are lucky, stock up on filberts and long flats.
The “go to” place for:
- Brushes
- Michael Harding or Williamsburg paints
- Varnishing brushes
- Sables
- Palettes
- Custom made canvasses
Vertecchi
Vicolo del Lupo, 10, Rome
www.vertecchi.com
This shop is five minutes from the studio. Vertecchi is a large, quite fancy stationery shop and the art supply section is behind the main store, in a tiny alleyway. It is known for its extensive paper supplies and I use it to buy Windsor and Newton rectified turpentine (which you will not be able to bring over on the plane) and the odd tube of Old Holland paints. I ran all over town doing a price check for a recent landscape painting workshop in Puglia, and Vertecchi were hands down the cheapest place in Rome for art supplies. It’s just a shame that their stock is so limited.
The “go to” place for:
- Turpentine
- Pencils and erasers for the Bargue course
- Toned Paper
Arte3
Via Del Fiume, 3a

As we have the Roman Accademia di Belle Arti at the end of the block, this shop specializes in student grade materials. I find I’m going here less and less, but it’s still good for very basic supplies. They would be better stocked for craft supplies and sculpture tools than Vertecchi. They have a good stock of paper and now carry Michael Harding paints.
The “go to” place for:
- Bits and bobs
- Michael Harding paints
